CHALLENGE OVERVIEW

The Edmonton EXPO Centre, a 522,000-square-feet facility established in 1984 and expanded in 2009, distinguishes itself as a beacon of sustainability and innovation. Currently constructing the nation's largest rooftop solar array, phase- 1 houses 5,754 solar panels generating 2.8 GW annually, showcasing a significant commitment to reducing environmental impact. 

Capital City Pilots are actively seeking inventive solutions to enhance and optimize the EXPO Centre's carbon emissions footprint, addressing aspects such as improving building & operation efficiencies, functionality, sustainability, and the overall guest experience. This challenge encompasses a range of critical areas, including, but not limited to improving: 

  • Improving building & operating efficiencies 
  • Dock marshalling 
  • Air Quality Monitoring and Air handling 
  • Smart building technology 
  • Lighting 
  • Occupancy data 
  • Food waste reduction

Desired outcomes:

  • Improve energy and emissions management to achieve goals of emissions reductions to create and maintain healthy building operating standards   
  • Prioritizing energy and air quality management for a healthier environment and enhanced sustainability practices 
  • Adhering to Healthy Buildings Standards for overall well-being 
    • Introducing automation to improve building efficiencies and elevate guest experiences, event attraction, supplier/vendor relations, and employee satisfaction

    Proposed solutions must meet the following criteria:

      • Pilot-ready innovation or technology 
      • Innovations that are functional, reliable, and scalable
      • Novel tools, technology or approaches to improve and address emission management, energy usage or automation efficiencies.  
      • Be user-friendly and scalable

      ACHIEVEMENTS

      Demonstrating a robust waste reduction strategy, the venue achieved an impressive 62% diversion rate in 2022 through the principles of reduce, reuse, and recycle. Notable certifications, including recognition as 'On the way to Zero Waste,' 'Climate Smart,' 'Green Key Global Meetings,' and 'BOMA BEST,' underscore their dedication to environmentally responsible practices. 

      In addressing greenhouse gas emissions, the Edmonton EXPO Centre reported a commendable 9% reduction in 2022 compared to the baseline year of 2018. Additional eco-friendly features, such as an ORCA digester, a beehouse, local food procurement, 100% recyclable signages, and donation programs, reflect a comprehensive commitment to sustainability. These initiatives position the Edmonton EXPO Centre not only as a premier event destination but also as a trailblazer in environmentally conscious practices.

We are looking for innovative solutions that can help revitalize downtown Edmonton, making it a more attractive and accessible destination for residents, visitors, and businesses alike.

      We are looking for proposals that focus on revitalizing downtown Edmonton. This can include but is not limited to, ideas for enhancing public spaces, improving the transportation network, supporting local businesses, creating new housing options, and promoting cultural and community events.

      Proposed solutions should aim to be practical, cost-effective, and scalable. We welcome proposals from both individuals and teams, including those from universities, research institutions, and private sector entities.
