CHALLENGE OVERVIEW

The City of Edmonton seeks solutions to surface existing and historical land-use information to improve redevelopment and drive density in the City of Edmonton. Former refueling sites (gas stations) are well known and mapped for redevelopment grant program consideration. However, understanding and identifying where other potentially contaminated sites are, such as former dry cleaners, will identifying priority growth areas, and support city-building goals.

Your solution will:

Improve the ability to align relevant economic development activities, reporting metrics, funding agreements, and grants based on data
Allow for a more streamlined redevelopment process, improving collaboration with the private sector

ABOUT BROWNFIELD REDEVELOPMENT

The Brownfield Redevelopment Grant Program is a proactive initiative aimed at fostering the revitalization of designated brownfield properties. This grant program plays a crucial role in promoting the restoration and repurposing of contaminated sites by offering financial support to offset the expenses associated with testing and remediation. By assisting in covering these costs, the program encourages developers and communities to undertake the necessary actions to address environmental concerns, transforming underutilized or blighted brownfields into productive, safe, and sustainable assets.

Through its efforts, the Brownfield Redevelopment Grant Program actively contributes to the creation of vibrant, revitalized spaces while simultaneously addressing environmental challenges and promoting responsible land use practices.

CHALLENGE OVERVIEW

Capital City Pilots seeks solutions that help visualize data on previous land-use information, held in public records or environmental records, as well as zoning information to expand eligibility of the Grant program that includes other potential contaminated sites, and land-use impacts, as well prioritizes nodes identified in the City Plan, for its potential for redevelopment. Former fueling sites were identified in the eligibility criteria for the Brownfield Redevelopment Grant, which has been expanded to include former dry-cleaning locations from contamination test data and land-use permitting data. The data obtained to visualize potential contaminated sites, by mapping/plotting of data, using historical land-use data archives, land-use permit information and longitudinal impact to support expansion of the Grant program and effective prioritization for testing, remediation and revitalization of City priority nodes and corridors. 

The challenge offers economic development, social and environmental impact benefits, reduces urban sprawl, supports the remediation of Brownfield contaminated sites, and revitalizes neighborhoods and public spaces.
